Working towards Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences

Collection launched: Jul 9, 2014

The event was a forum for the discussion of the challenges related to the development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software (see the original call for papers here). Papers include Experience Reports, Position Papers and Survey Papers, on such challenges as:

  • the development process that leads to new software
  • the support, maintenance and usage of software
  • the role of communities or industry
  • policy issues relating to developing sustainable software
  • education and training

Submissions were originally released to the community as short preprint articles (via ArXiv or FigShare) and participants were then encouraged to develop and extend their original submissions in light of the discussion at the workshop for this collection.

A summary by Daniel Katz et al. provides an overview of the main themes and topics brought up at the first workshop, setting in context the issues and shared experiences that were discussed.

All articles have been peer reviewed and discussion between authors, readers, and the community is encouraged via the online commentary facility at the bottom of each article page.

The second workshop (WSSSPE2) will take place in New Orleans on 16 November 2014 in conjunction with Supercomputing 2014. See the full call for papers here
